"I would really love to talk to an actual driver next because they are the ones actually out on the track doing it. These are the people who literally drive the sport. They know why they do what they do and how they do it. They are on of the best sources of information because they are current. They know what modifications are out there for their cars, and they know how to do all these things that I want to learn about. So I am really excited to find a driver who I could interview. My hero in drifting is Rhys Millen who is such a storied and historical figure to the sport. He drives the car that is the background on my blog. So if I could somehow find a way to talk to him, I would be in complete awe."
When I went to work the track at Irwindale Speedway for the Formula Drift Title Fight I got to meet him at an autograph session like any other fan. He signed a poster for me and I told him a bit about my project. He then preceded to tell me that I should email him at his website Rhys Millen Racing. So I did exactly that. I emailed their sales team giving them some background information on who I was and what exactly I was doing. This was on Thursday. So four days later, I get a reply that reads like this:
"Ricardo,
It is good to hear you are so passionate about Drifting. When is you r project due? I only ask because Rhys will be out of the office for the month of November. Is there any questions i might be able to answer for you? I was the one who got Rhys involved in Drifting. I myself had a AE86 before they were popular and entered Rhys into the 1st Drift Showoff at Irwindale back in 2003. I hope i might be able to help you out. if not you can contact us in December to see what Rhys schedule will look like."
Needless to say I was in shock and awe when I realized they had actually replied and not only that, they were willing to help. So now I have subsequently emailed them back and told them I would love to interview the man who replied to my email as well as Mr. Rhys Millen, and it seems like that might just happen.
My project has just taken a complete turn into what I can only describe as awesome for lack of a better word.
Thank you to everyone at Rhys Millen Racing for their help and support and I hope to talk to you soon! It means the world.
Here is my poster signed by Rhys Millen. |
