Tandem Drifting

So the basis of drift competition is the tandem match.  Each round a number of drivers compete to qualify in the top 32 category.  From there, drivers go head to head in drift battles elimination style until there is only 16 drivers, then 8, then 4.

The job of each driver is different.  The lead driver attempts to run the best possible line as if they were doing a single run.  Chase drivers must mimic the lead driver as closely as possible and stay in close proximity.  The drivers then switch positions and the overall better driver takes the win and moves on.

Judges can chose to give the win to one driver or if they find it is too close to call they go one more time or OMT as you will see in the following video.

So here for your viewing pleasure, one of the best tandem matches I could source.  These are two of the best Japanese drifters competing in the D1 Grand Prix.

Here, is one more video of the greatest drift battle I have ever seen in my life.  The cool thing is that I was there in person for this event in Long Beach for Formula Drift's Round 1 of competition in April of 2013.  So here it is, the best battle (IMO) ever between legendary Japanese driver Daigo Saito and the Norwegian Hammer, Frederick Aasbo.
